The second edition of Euro FootGolf kicks off this weekend at Magnolia Park in England. After their win in 2017, UK FootGolf will be hosting the event from 26-29 September. The venue has hosted The UK Open for the past three years and is widely regarded as one of the most testing layouts in Europe. This time 15 countries are represented as well as Team X (A team created to offer an equal opportunity for all teams) to create a 16 team field after Germany and Turkey could not be in the UK. The 16 teams are split into four groups of four and each nation will play the other once on Friday and Saturday morning (AM/PM/AM). Each nation has between 9 and 15 players who can play at any time when chosen for a match. Each match will feature six games; Three played in foursomes and three singles. Each game can have a substitute player who can sub in and out after each hole. The games are played in matchplay using the traditional golf style scoring format where once the player is ‘up’ more than the number of holes remaining then the game is over (Example 4 up with three to play equals a 4&3 win).
Each game is worth 1 point for the team and an overall match win is worth 3 points. Tied matches earn a point and tied games score zero. After the group stage, the top two teams qualify for a pre-drawn knockout stage (Team X cannot qualify but they can score points). The quarter finals are played on Saturday, afternoon with the semi finals, Third place match and final played on Sunday. Also on Sunday, all teams that lost in the group stage and QF have the opportunity to play for position for their nation. Each country can choose a minimum of two pairs and two singles to play over 18 holes where the best four scores count. The losing QF will play for positions 5-8 and so on. Meanwhile, the final four will battle it out to become champions of Europe. You can follow the event here LIVE.
