The world's number one footgolfer, British Ben Clarke won the 2019 European FootGolf Grand Slam. “Big Ben” is now giving advice for the new players.
What did you need to win the European FootGolf Grand Slam? I think the tournaments during the European Tour came at good times, at times where I felt good about my game and I was playing with confidence. There were some new courses this year and also courses, where I haven’t done so well in previous years, so my focus had to be higher. What do you do to stay on top? It’s important not to get distracted about other players and just focus on your own game. Players are improving all the time, you just have to make sure you’re continuing to improve at a faster rate than the others to stay ahead. What would you recommend FootGolf players that are just getting started? I’d suggest to enjoy every kick, the good ones and the bad ones also, it’s all part of the learning journey to FootGolf. Practice as much as you can and find the techniques that work best for you. ![]() After winning the Grand Final in Portugal, the Italian Fabio Mazzer became the best over 45 player of the continent. The new champion talked about his four ingredients of success. Are you satisfied with your game played during the Grand Final of the European FootGolf Grand Slam? This was my second presence on the Portugal Open and I must say that the Portuguese team has grown a lot over the past two years. The field was very beautiful and technical in a wonderful location. I played in the final group on the decisive day both in 2018 and 2019 and so I am very satisfied with my performance. Being always and constantly with the best players of the world helped me to reach a very high level in FootGolf. It is very difficult but rewarding. What were the key points in your game to be crowned the European champion? Constance, character, desire and strategy. Constance in the level of play. The character in being able to overcome difficulties after making a mistake. The desire in wanting to improve any detail that is fundamental in this sport and make the difference. And finally the strategy to be applied on every different course. These were the keys for me in achieving this fantastic result. Any specific preparation before big tournaments? In order to compete at these levels, you must work hard to be able to always improve. Do specific workouts on tee shots, approaches, and putts! So much training, so much passion and character to be able to face difficult fields and great champions with the utmost respect but at the same time with the utmost self-confidence. The work associated with quality always rewarding. PORTUGAL OPEN ![]() The 2019 Yamaha FootGolf Asia Cup was held in Australia this week. The 2019 Yamaha FootGolf Asia Cup have been played in Salamander Bay this week with six countries participating (Chinese Taipei, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, China and Australia). RESULTS Australia won the team competition beating Japan in the final. Team China was victorious in the senior category. RESULTS Men 1st Australia 2nd Japan 3rd China Senior 1st China 2nd Australia 3rd Japan Australia is not resting, the Australian Open (FIFG 250) is starting on Saturday including the world champion, Matias Perrone on the starting list. Jan-Willem Baas won the FIFG 500 Portugal Open last weekend after a playoff against Wesley van den Broek. The Dutch is lucky, he can practice FootGolf next to his home. It helped him to sharpen his putts.
You must have enjoyed the Portugal open... Just like the first two editions I had a great time. I like the course very much as well as the way everything was organised by the Portugal federation. I respect the way how they’ve dealt with the extreme weather conditions on Friday and digging new holes till late in the evening, even in the night. They gave more than 100 percent to make the players happy and for sure this is one of the main reasons why this tournament is so popular among the players. What made you the champion of the tournament? My putting is probably the main key point to this victory, except my miss from 1,5 meter on hole 12 on Sunday. I’m not a hard hitter like Wesley van den Broek or Ben Clarke, but on this short course this was not a real disadvantage. And beside my putting I think that the fact that I’m always pretty calm and relaxed on the course also has a positive effect on my results. On Saturday I started with a triple bogey on hole 1, but I didn’t panic and told myself that this was just one hole and kept confidence. How do you prepare to compete in tournaments like these? I have no special way to prepare myself during tournaments. I try to play on all the tournaments that are organized by FootGolf Holland and in I play every Wednesday evening on the course of Crimpenerhout, which is luckily so close to my house. I’m pretty addicted to the game, so I just try to play as much as I can. RESULTS ![]() The 2019 European FootGolf Grand Slam series ended in Portugal. The Grand Final was won by Jan Willam Baas. The Federation for International FootGolf is proud to introduce the logo of the 4th FootGolf World Cup that will take place in Japan in 2020. Thank you to “Until Creative Agency” from Portugal for their design. The agency has given us a description of the logo’s features: “Our Creative Concept starts from the pure immersion in Japanese culture. It’s a modern interpretation of great contrasts that characterize Japan. Simple and advanced, chaotic and peaceful, traditional and contemporary. Japanese cherry blossoms were the starting point to find simple geometric elements that during the creative process were unfolded and combined to find the end result. Our symbol is the result of the mixture of shapes and color combinations that represent in Japanese culture the renewal, strength and persistence, virtues strongly associated with sport. The creative process ended in a cultural explosion that resulted in this new full of live identity, that personies the culture in question. A visual of a World Cup is always a milestone for any design agency or studio, so it was a pleasure to work with this identity that made us go in pursuit of all the components needed to build a brand: culture, people and internationalization.” This is just the beginning of the event we are all looking forward to next year!!! ![]()
